Where to go

Where to travel in February 2027 from Singapore

February splits in two: Chinese New Year week, then three weekends without a holiday. Where's in season, who else is celebrating, and the extra day off families get.

Chinese New Year week

The first day of Chinese New Year is Saturday 6 February and the second is a Sunday, so Monday 8 February is the holiday in lieu: three days off with no leave. The best trade is four days of leave after it, Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 February, for nine days:

Sat 6 – Sun 14 Feb 2027

With children in school

MOE schools also have Tuesday 9 February off, a day in lieu for Chinese New Year. So if you’re taking one day of leave, make it that Tuesday rather than the Friday before. You get the same four days off, and the children are off for all of them:

Who else is on holiday

Twelve of our 14 destinations celebrate too: Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Taiwan all have Lunar New Year holidays, so flights fill up and hotel prices rise. Thailand doesn’t, which is why Bangkok and Phuket top our ranking for the weekend. There’s more on the overlap, country by country, in where to travel over Chinese New Year 2027.

If you’re driving to JB, plan around the rush home. Malaysians working in Singapore start heading back on Thursday 4 February, Johor’s schools are off from 5 to 14 February, and our Causeway jam outlook has the crossing heavy on Fri 5 Feb, Sat 6 Feb, Mon 8 Feb and Tue 9 Feb.

After Chinese New Year

Singapore is back at work on Tuesday 9 February, and there’s no other public holiday until Hari Raya Puasa on Wednesday 10 March. That leaves three ordinary weekends in the middle of the dry season: 13–14, 20–21 and 27–28 February. The first is still the tail of the holiday in places (Johor’s schools are off until Sunday 14 February), but after that the holiday rush has passed.

Chap Goh Meh: Saturday 20 February

The fifteenth day of the new year, the Lantern Festival or Chap Goh Meh, falls on Saturday 20 February and closes the New Year season. Penang usually holds a Chap Goh Meh celebration on George Town’s waterfront, where mandarin oranges are tossed into the sea for luck in love. Taiwan marks the night with lantern displays, and at Shifen, near Taipei, with the Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival. Dates and venues are confirmed nearer the time, and they have moved before, so check before you book.

Ramadan begins

Ramadan starts around Monday 8 February (Awal Ramadan is a public holiday in Johor) and runs until Hari Raya Puasa on Wednesday 10 March. In Malaysia, Batam and Bintan, that means Ramadan bazaars in the evenings, and some Muslim-run restaurants closed during the day.

February has nine of our 14 destinations at their best, one more than January:

Da Nang & Hoi An is the newcomer: its dry season starts in February and runs to August. The ferry islands are in between. Batam’s rains ease in February, while Bintan’s last until March. Bali is still in its rainy season, and Hong Kong and Taipei are cool: fine for a city break, but not at their best.

Questions

Where is good to travel in February from Singapore?

Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Penang, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok, Da Nang & Hoi An and Melaka, going by the months each place is usually at its best. Over Chinese New Year (6 to 8 February), Bangkok and Phuket are the picks, because Thailand doesn't have a Lunar New Year holiday.

Do schools close after Chinese New Year 2027?

Yes. MOE schools have Tuesday 9 February 2027 off, a day in lieu for Chinese New Year, so children are off from Saturday 6 to Tuesday 9 February. One day of leave on the Tuesday gives parents the same four days.

When is Chap Goh Meh in 2027?

Saturday 20 February 2027, the fifteenth day of the lunar new year. It marks the end of the New Year season.

Is February a good time to visit Da Nang?

Yes: going by our ratings, its dry season runs from February to August. Vietnam celebrates Tết over Chinese New Year, though, so book early for that week, or go later in the month.

Is February a good time for Bali?

Not for the weather: it's still the rainy season there (December to February). Bali's best months are April to October.

Holiday dates come from MOM's gazetted list, and the leave maths and rankings are worked out the same way as on our long-weekend pages. Updated 17 Oct 2026.
