How each day is rated

Heavy
The eve and the first day of a Singapore long weekend, or of school holidays that last a week or more, going out of Singapore; their last day, coming back. Also the eve of Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali, when Malaysians who work in Singapore go home, and the end of each festival break, when they return.
Busy
The days in between. Long weekends that only schools get, such as the Youth Day school holiday. Johor's public holidays, long weekends and school holidays, when JB's malls and attractions fill up. The eve of a midweek Singapore holiday: a Thursday holiday becomes a four-day weekend for anyone who takes the Friday off.
Usual
Everything else. Usual days still have their peaks: into Singapore early on weekday mornings and out in the evenings, out on Saturday mornings and back on Sunday evenings.

ICA's own advisories, which come out a few days before each peak, follow the same pattern. Find them in the ICA newsroom.

Beat the queue

  • Go early or late. On peak days ICA advises travelling outside peak hours, such as early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Use a MyICA QR code. It clears you through Singapore immigration without handing over your passport. Carry the passport anyway, with at least six months' validity left.
  • Allow extra time. ICA has stepped up security checks at all checkpoints since 28 February 2026, so waits at peaks run longer.
  • Look before you leave. Check the cameras above. On the road, the EMAS signs on the BKE and AYE show the traffic at the checkpoints.
  • Take the train. From February 2027 (expected), the RTS Link will run from Woodlands North to Bukit Chagar in about five minutes, with both countries' immigration before you board. Until then, the KTM Shuttle Tebrau runs from Woodlands to JB Sentral.

Planning a trip over? See Johor Bahru for a long weekend, and our RTS Link guide.

Questions

Is there a live camera for the Woodlands Checkpoint and the Causeway?

Yes. LTA has three cameras at Woodlands: on the BKE heading to the checkpoint, at the checkpoint looking back towards the BKE, and on the Causeway itself, looking towards Johor. This page shows all three and the three at Tuas, and checks data.gov.sg for new images every two minutes.

Why are there no cameras for the PIE, CTE or other expressways?

LTA switched off its other traffic cameras on 30 June 2026. The only ones still running are at the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints, including one each on the BKE and AYE leading to them, and at Sentosa Gateway.

When is the Causeway jam worst?

Going out of Singapore, on the eve and the first morning of a long weekend or school holiday; coming back, on its last day. The days before Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali are heavy too, as Malaysians who work in Singapore go home. Over the National Day weekend in 2026 more than 2.1 million travellers crossed at Woodlands and Tuas, and car travellers leaving at peak hours waited up to three hours, according to ICA.

When does the RTS Link open?

Passenger service is expected to start in February 2027, LTA and Malaysia's Ministry of Transport said on 2 October 2026, once the line has passed an independent safety assessment and both governments have approved it. The exact date and the fares haven't been announced.

Should I use Woodlands or Tuas?

The Causeway at Woodlands takes you into JB's city centre. The Second Link at Tuas is the way to western Johor, including Iskandar Puteri and Legoland Malaysia. Check both sets of cameras before you pick one.

How is the jam outlook worked out?

From the holiday calendars on both sides: Singapore's public and school holidays, and Johor's public and school holidays, checked against MOM, MOE, the Johor state government, the Malaysian Prime Minister's Department and Malaysia's Ministry of Education. The eve and first day of each break are rated heavy going out, its last day heavy coming back, and the days in between busy. It's an outlook from calendars, not traffic data, and runs to December 2027.
