Two long weekends, two weeks apart

Hari Raya Puasa: Wednesday 10 March

A midweek holiday, so it takes leave to make it a trip. Two days, either Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 or Thursday 11 and Friday 12 March, give you five days off. Four days give you nine, Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 March:

Sat 6 – Sun 14 Mar 2027

With no leave, the Wednesday on its own suits a day trip, which is why Johor Bahru tops our ranking for it. Before you choose, read who else is on holiday: Malaysia and Indonesia both celebrate, and Bali has Nyepi that week.

Good Friday: 26 March

A free three-day weekend, two weeks later. Four days of leave in the week before, Monday 22 to Thursday 25 March, make it nine days, Saturday 20 to Sunday 28 March:

Sat 20 – Sun 28 Mar 2027

The school holidays in between

Singapore’s March school holidays run from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21 March, between the two. If your children are in school, that’s the week to take: five days of leave, Monday 15 to Friday 19 March, give you nine days off together. School holidays mean busier flights and hotels, and our Causeway jam outlook has the crossing heavy on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 March going out, and on Sunday 21 March coming back.

Who else is on holiday over Hari Raya Puasa

Hari Raya Puasa is a public holiday in Malaysia and Indonesia, and in 2027 it comes with more:

  • Malaysia: Hari Raya Aidilfitri is the biggest festival of the year. Johor has Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March off, Malaysians working in Singapore head home on the eve, and the Causeway is heavy on Tuesday 9 March.
  • Indonesia: the government’s 2027 holiday list makes Saturday 6 to Monday 15 March one long break: Nyepi on Monday 8 March, Idul Fitri on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 March, and collective leave days on 9, 12 and 15 March (joint ministerial decree, signed 15 September 2026). Collective leave is optional for private companies, but that’s ten days off for many Indonesians, so book Batam and Bintan ferries early.
  • Bali: Nyepi, the Day of Silence, is Monday 8 March, and the whole island stops for 24 hours. Visitors stay in their hotels, and the airport normally closes too: in 2026 it shut from 6am to 6am the next day. If your trip covers the 8th, plan your flights around it.
  • Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and Taiwan: ordinary working days. That’s why Da Nang and Taipei follow Johor Bahru in our ranking: both are worth two days of leave for five days off, and neither is celebrating.

Good Friday: the islands are back

Over Good Friday, a free three-day weekend suits the short flights again, and our ranking puts Langkawi, Penang and Phuket first:

It’s also a good weekend for a ferry trip. Batam and Bintan are at their best from March, after months of rain. Indonesia has Good Friday off too, with Thursday 25 March as a collective leave day, so expect the islands to be busier than on an ordinary weekend. Hong Kong takes four days for Easter, from Good Friday to Easter Monday (gov.hk), so it’s at its busiest.

Taipei is the other place that turns in March: its best months are March to April and October to December, so spring is one of its two good seasons.

Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Bali and Hong Kong are OK rather than at their best, and none of the 14 is in its rainy season. Bali’s best months start in April, so it’s worth waiting a few weeks for if you can.
