Where to travel over Chinese New Year 2027 from Singapore
CNY 2027 gives you Saturday 6 to Monday 8 February off, or nine days with four days of leave. Where February's weather is good, and which places celebrate too, so they're busier and pricier.
The dates
The first day of Chinese New Year falls on Saturday 6 February 2027 and the second on Sunday 7 February, so Monday 8 February is the holiday in lieu. That’s three days off with no leave. Here’s every way to stretch it:

The best trade is four days of leave after the holiday, Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 February, for nine days off. Many employers also let staff leave early on Chinese New Year’s Eve (Friday 5 February), which makes the one-day option cheaper still.
Who else is on holiday
Our ranking weighs three things for every long weekend: the weather that month, how much leave the trip needs, and whether the destination is on holiday too. Over Chinese New Year, the last one matters most.
| # | Destination | Holiday there too? | Weather | Leave needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Phuket Thailand | No | Good | None |
| 2 | Bangkok Thailand | No | Good | None |
| 3 | Langkawi Malaysia | Yes, book early | Good | None |
| 4 | Penang Malaysia | Yes, book early | Good | None |
| 5 | Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam | Yes, book early | Good | None |
| 6 | Kuala Lumpur Malaysia | Yes, book early | Good | None |
| 7 | Melaka Malaysia | Yes, book early | Good | None |
| 8 | Johor Bahru Malaysia | Yes, book early | Good | None |
| 9 | Da Nang & Hoi An Vietnam | Yes, book early | Good | 1 day |
| 10 | Batam Indonesia | Yes, book early | OK | None |
| 11 | Hong Kong Hong Kong | Yes, book early | OK | 1 day |
| 12 | Taipei Taiwan | Yes, book early | OK | 1 day |
| 13 | Bali Indonesia | Yes, book early | Rainy | None |
| 14 | Bintan Indonesia | Yes, book early | Rainy | None |
- Malaysia: Chinese New Year is a public holiday across the country, so Johor Bahru, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Melaka and Langkawi all have their own holiday crowds. If you’re driving to JB, expect heavy Causeway traffic around the eve.
- Indonesia: Imlek is a national holiday on Saturday 6 February, and Friday 5 February is a collective leave day, so Batam, Bintan and Bali get a three-day weekend’s worth of domestic travellers at the same time as you.
- Vietnam: Tết starts the same day. The official break is expected to run for about a week, and many family-run shops and restaurants close for the first few days.
- Hong Kong and Taiwan: both have several days of Lunar New Year holidays, so flights are busy and hotel prices rise.
- Thailand: not a national public holiday. Bangkok’s Chinatown, Yaowarat, still celebrates in a big way, which can be a reason to go.

If you’re taking nine days
With Saturday 6 to Sunday 14 February off, there’s time for two places in one trip. Thailand still has the edge: no Chinese New Year holiday, and dry weather in February. Bangkok and Phuket pair well, about an hour and a half apart by air. Da Nang’s dry season starts in February and it’s worth four days or more, but Tết makes it busier.
Book early
Everyone in the region wants the same few days, so book flights and hotels early. Put your leave in by Sat 19 Dec (six weeks before the earliest leave option), and add Chinese New Year 2027 to your calendar so the reminder comes to you.
Questions
When is Chinese New Year 2027 in Singapore?
Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 February 2027. Because the second day falls on a Sunday, Monday 8 February is a public holiday, so you get Saturday to Monday off.
Is Chinese New Year a public holiday in Thailand?
No, it isn't a national public holiday there, which is why Bangkok and Phuket rank well for a Chinese New Year trip from Singapore. Bangkok's Chinatown still celebrates.
Is Batam busy over Chinese New Year?
Yes. Imlek is a national holiday in Indonesia (Saturday 6 February 2027), with Friday 5 February as a collective leave day, so Batam and Bintan are busy with domestic visitors too. February is also still in Bintan’s rainy season.
How many days off can I get over Chinese New Year 2027?
Three with no leave (Sat 6 – Mon 8 Feb), four with one day of leave (Friday 5 February), nine with four days (Tuesday 9 to Friday 12 February) and ten with five days (Monday 1 to Friday 5 February).
